What is XR (E(x)tended (R)eality)?
What is XR?
XR stands for E(x)tended (R)eality. It includes virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). These tools give us opportunities to connect with audiences in new and different ways.
You’ve probably interacted with XR without even knowing it. Ever played Pokémon Go or Beat Saber? Looked at anything on Google Maps live view? Used a filter on social media? You’ve used XR.
Creative approaches to XR range from the commercial to the insightful. The immersive nature of the technology lets artists bring users closer to experiencing diverse lives, or difficult events, or discrimination, through their own eyes. With XR, our stories can get bolder and brighter, and the technology’s interactive elements means we can unite storytelling with teachable experiences.
So, what can I do with it?
Let’s say you’ve got a genius story idea.
Before you work it into the next bestseller, or BAFTA-winner, or West End sensation, have you thought about how your story might unfold in a different format? What if your readers could choose the path of your narrative? What if you could take your audience beyond the flat-screen and into the world to explore it themselves?
XR has evolved how we communicate in this digital age. And we think XR deserves to be used in more than social media filters! With XR, audiences are no longer passive listeners or viewers. They become part of your story – a story that has pushed beyond the traditional narrative structures and into entirely new (digital) spaces.
