Creating Connections
At B3 we make connections between Britain’s multi-cultural communities and the UK’s creative
industries ‒ uniting the power of digital media with the creative potential of emerging artists
and fi lm-makers. All of our activities are focused on finding and nurturing new talent and
connecting this talent with industry.

The B3 Model
B3 acts as a catalyst, physical and virtual hub, laboratory, incubator, producer, showcase and
distributor in the UK and abroad. We do this for some of our most gifted Black, Asian and
Minority Ethnic (BAME) fi lm-makers and artists, creating new opportunities and professional
pathways for them. 

Our Portfolio

We do this through:

Networking:  Giving access to people, networks, opportunities,
ideas, technologies and skills.
Training:  Hot-housing new ideas and talent.
Support:  Offering bespoke mentoring and one to one advice
from people who have already done it.
Production: Providing support and state-of-the-art facilities for
the production of new work and showreels.
Showcasing:  Creating showcases for new work to be seen in;
raising profi les and connecting artists with audiences.

What We Do

FeatureLab

FeatureLab aims to fast-forward the film-making process for those who are ready to make the leap to full-length feature film for commercial release. It works with writers and directors with a background in film, TV, theatre, radio, visual arts or journalism, who understand the building blocks of drama and narrative and have something different to say. FeatureLab is produce in partnership with by B3 Media, Skillset and the Binger Filmlab.

 

PowerLab

PowerLab is a nine-month programme of bespoke leadership training and support for existing and emerging leaders in the cultural and creative sectors. Their chosen field may be in design, film, music, theatre, writing or visual art but this largely doesn’t matter. Supported by a network of partners which include: National Theatre, Young Vic, Film 4 and the Tate, PowerLab is aimed at talented creative entrepreneurs looking for opportunities to stretch their multi-skilled abilities as creative producers with backgrounds in visual arts, film, digital media, theatre, spoken word and music.

 

Blank Slate 2009

Blank Slate is a UK-wide digital short film scheme which supports the next generation of cutting-edge, Black, Asian and minority ethnic filmmaking talent, resulting in an exciting and eclectic range of work. It also acts as a springboard for some of the best talent to progress to features. Celebrating its 5th anniversary this year, Blank Slate is part of the Film Council’s New Cinema Fund Digital Shorts Scheme. Blank Slate is produced by B3 Media in partnership with the UK Film Council and Arts Council England.

The Team

Marc Boothe – Founder and MD, B3 Media

Marc is a creative producer, with a passion for supporting, developing and producing emerging talent across film, new media and visual arts. He produced the acclaimed feature film Bullet Boy, directed by Saul Dibb, for which he was nominated Best British Producer by the London Film Critics Circle.
Marc is also Founder and Managing Director of B3 Media; an award winning digital media arts network, based in Brixton, which has been responsible for a number of innovative initiatives ranging from new media, moving image to digital cinema. He is Executive Producer on the award-winning UK-wide digital short scheme Blank Slate (supported by the UK Film Council and the Arts Council England).
Currently, he is developing his next feature for Film Four, as part of B3’s FeatureLab, a collaboration between Film4, Binger Filmlab and Skillset, which also includes a slate of six feature film projects. Marc devised and produced Tate: Remixed, a digital media collaboration between B3 Media and Tate and PowerLabs, a cross-platform development labs in collaboration with the Channel4, National Theatre, Tate and the Young Vic for the Arts Council England.
Previously, Marc worked as a Senior Executive at the UK Film Council’s (UKFC) New Cinema Fund and at the Bank of England. He holds an MBA and is the recipient of a NESTA Fellowship award (National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts).

Adeela Sharif – Development Executive

Adeela Sharif originally trained as a solicitor and has worked in the film industry for the last 10 years, at Intermedia Films (Adaptation, The Quiet  American, Sliding Doors) and at Icon Entertainment International (The Passion  Of  The Christ, Apocalypto) respectively.  She has been a freelance story editor (UK Film Council, B3 Media, Intermedia Films, Mission Pictures, Pipedream Pictures, Martin Pope Productions) working on many award winning shorts, including Hibernation (winner Edinburgh 2005), Mash-up  (2006) and BRO9 (2006).   She is now working as Development Executive at B3 Media.  She is also Executive Editor for ‘Group Analysis’, the journal for group analytic psychiatry

Dominique Oliver

Dom worked as a Runner and Researcher across Film and TV (inc. Trouble, BBC, Teddington Studios) before setting up Resource Productions Ltd in 2001 at the age of 21 and going on to produce an average of 50 videos a year. She has set-up and runs a range of media businesses and organisations including Slough Digital Enterprise, (a low budget kit-hire company), Active Archive (an oral video history charity), Moving Image Mela (a shorts competition as part of the Same Difference Film Festival) and Mediaworks (a Media networking scheme supported by Westfocus). She coordinated the largest ever youth film scheme for First Light in 2002, was recently awarded the largest Mediabox grant in the South East Region, and was selected as an Ambassador for Women’s Business. She first worked with B3 Media in 2004, when she was commissioned to produce a short as part of the Digital Shorts Blank Slate Scheme; she now manages a range of film and arts projects for the company.

Jeanne Nguyen – Marketing and Outreach Support

Jeanne joined B3 during its first year of operation, bringing expertise in marketing, administrative and financial management from the design sector, having previously worked for Nina Campbell. Jeanne has built a wide range of local and regional partnerships to deliver education and outreach programmes for B3 over the past seven years.  Jeanne’s activities include managing key support activities, grassroots community and outreach programs, Q&A sessions, and other special projects. She is also responsible for running the national outreach programme to encourage new BAME applicants to submit proposals to the B3 Media Blank Slate digital shorts scheme.

Tim Coomb - Accountant

Tim CoombTim is a Fellow of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants and for the last fifteen years has worked in a senior financial capacity with a number of small to medium sized organisations. For a number of years he was Head of Finance for the Authors' Licensing & Collecting Society which collects and distributes photocopying and broadcast retransmission royalties to writers.

Michael Berliner – Projects and Development Assistant

 

Michael is a Pembroke College Oxford graduate recruited to B3 after producing for their Blank Slate scheme, now supporting Dom Oliver in running B3’s various schemes. He’s an aspiring producer, having made shorts such as The Beachcombers, winning the ITV/Film London Best of Boroughs viewers’ choice award in 2008; Looking For Marilyn, winning the Straight8 film competition and screening on Channel 4 as a Three Minute Wonder; and the Blank Slate short Whore, which has been picked up for representation by the British Council. He will be producing again for Blank Slate 09.
